I imagine spittle dribbling like gore from the open wounds that serve as the outlet for their barks and yips. I see them, eyes wild, arms akimbo and flailing wildly, as the work themselves into a fine religious lather over the relative supremacy of their chosen delusions. What gives? Is a resurrected prophet somehow better or worse than one who ascends to the heavens on a magical flying horse? Does walking on water trump the perfection of prose? By itself, it is a simple "pick me, pick me!" plea presented in the form of a command. Further, I do not see any value it creates for society as a whole, unless that society is religious, and believes in the particular God in question. As an Atheist, and Anti-theist, I find it intriguing that the very first commandment ( the implication being that it is of paramount importance) is concerned with the position of priority this God seeks to establish of other gods.   Atheists all throughout the world experience being shunned in one way or another when they oppose the teachings of the religion they were born into. Even people who are not yet adults are shamed and sometimes kicked out of their home. Here is one such story, shared by Deborah, who is now also on the AR volunteer team. My experience of having to "lie" about my beliefs is probably a common one. I was indoctrinated as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in a large family. I had 12 siblings and two wonderful parents, though very strict. At the age of 17 I was disfellowshipped (shunned) for smoking cigarettes. Even though I was turned in for smoking, the elders of the congregation were really disfellowshipping me for being discovered as a lesbian. At that time, I had finally found others like myself and reached out to them.   Thanks to Billy for this email in response to our morality newsletter. Being brought up religious meant that, either intentionally or unintentionally, I was taught that doing the right thing made god like you more. This meant that if you did good things, he would reward you. I can remember riding down a country road on my bicycle when I was six or seven years old, and being terrorized by some crows that had made a nest in one of the electric poles that lined the road. I was scared out of my mind and asked god to magically transport me to my home up the road so I wouldn’t have to worry about the birds that were dive-bombing me. When the magic transport didn’t happen, out of fear and anger, I can remember saying “God, if you don’t do this for me I’m going to go the devil.” Of course, the magic transportation still didn’t happen.   Denmark's recent legislative move to ban Quran burnings has garnered attention in the wake of the widespread protests and security concerns stemming from previous incidents in Denmark and neighboring Sweden. The bill, passed on December 7th with 94 votes in favor, prohibits the public mistreatment of holy texts, including the Quran, with penalties ranging from fines to a maximum of two years in prison. The Danish Ministry of Justice stated that the aim is to counter the perceived "systematic mockery" contributing to an escalating terrorism threat. Notably, the bill had its critics, including Inger Stojberg, leader of the Denmark Democrats party, who expressed concern about the impact on freedom of speech.
